ALEXANDRA: 100 YEARS OF HISTORY IN THE MAKING
The year 2012 marks two significant birthdays in South Africa - the ANC's centenary and Alexandra township's 100th year of making history. As one of the oldest formal black settlements in South Africa, the Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GALXCOC) has identified the opportunity to expose the rich history, culture and heritage of Alexandra as the "mother" of townships in Gauteng, where some of South Africa's greatest leaders and politicians, celebrities and musicians hail from, while putting it in the spotlight for local investment and business partnerships. The result is GALXCOC's Alex 100T project, which for 12 months will highlight the potential of this energetic hub adjacent to our financial capital, Sandton.
Plans are underway to host a high-profile launch event in February 2012, with a year-long rollout of activities for the remaining months revolving around culture, education, environment, health, hospitality, sport, tourism and a business expo that will assist to bridge the divide between Alex and its surrounds and provide new socio-economic opportunities for Alex businesses. The Alex 100T project team will coordinate and execute these activities to expand the Alex brand and promote the area for social and business development.
GALXCOC, together with project managers, Adele Lucas Promotions (ALP) and event management company, Zinto Activation Group (ZAG) will be responsible for engaging with government, NGOs, the business sector and the community to ensure the initiatives get underway. The team will embark on a full-scale marketing campaign to raise the profile of Alexandra, change perceptions and put it on the tourism map.
Mpho Motsumi, President of GALXCOC says, "Alex 100T will help us to advance industrial, commercial and local economic interests in the township. This will benefit the citizens of Alexandra and help them live sustainable lives."
Comments Toby Chance, managing director of Adele Lucas Promotions, "Among the many activities, we will have a tourism month with an Alex campaign to target local and international tourists - the Fifa World Cup put Soweto firmly on the map; we need to do the same for Alex. This is one of our goals for Alex 100T - to change negative perceptions of Alex and create opportunities for small businesses to network and showcase their talent, products and services."
Ultimately the activities of Alex 100T are aimed at uplifting, developing and enhancing life in the township long after 2012. The project intends leaving a legacy of development through raising funds to ensure the continuation of projects and by creating jobs, while instilling pride and ownership in the hearts and minds of Alex residents.
