BONNIE TYLER ARRIVES IN CAPE TOWN
FIRST LADY OF ROCK TO HEAT UP CAPE TOWN THIS WEEKEND
Bloemfontein is cold this time of year. Overnight temperatures are known to hover around 2 or 3 degrees, easily dipping into freezing point. The locals know to keep warm. But this past Sunday night temperatures soared when the International First Lady of Rock took to the stage in the Free State. Back after a 20-year hiatus, Bonnie Tyler is in South Africa performing to capacity crowds as part of a 3 city, 5 concerts tour. Tyler sold out two concerts at Johannesburg's Emperors Palace months in advance. Bloemfontein was no exception, with crowds at the Callie Human Hall singing along to Tyler's chart-topping hits. Her repertoire includes Lost in France, Holding Out for Hero, and her platinum selling, global #1 hit Total Eclipse of the Heart.
It's been 20 years since Tyler was last in South Africa. Over that time much has changed. During her last visit fans sent postcards and letters to her fanclub and record company congratulating her on the performances. In 2013 they've taken to Tyler's Facebook wall instead:
Carin Vosloo - Pretoria: Everything I expected you to be, beautiful, amazing and charming. Fabulous show, thank you for taking me back to the 80's. Enjoy the rest of SA.
Herman Alberts - Johannesburg: A wonderful and extremely talented artist and a person for whom I have tons of respect. Despite the achievements and success, the fact that you are still the wonderful, natural and down to earth lady that you are is absolutely stunning.
Margaret Fogarty: - Bloemfontein: The Concert was absolutely Fabulous. Bonnie Tyler still has it!!!. We loved the show she is still super sexy What a voice. Simply The Best!
This week Bonnie Tyler jets into Cape Town to wrap up her tour of with two concerts at the CTICC. She works hard but plays hard too. Tyler will spend three days enjoying the tourist sights before buckling down to sound checks ahead of the shows on 6 & 7 September. She has daytrips planned to the Cape Winelands, Cape Point and Table Mountain and fondly recalls her last visit to the Mother City:
"We had lunch on top of Table Mountain. There must have been around twenty of us, enjoying the most magnificent views and just having the best time. Your local wines were lovely too. I look forward to enjoying them again. One of your local radio presenters has promised to do a tasting with me!" says Tyler.
Bonnie Tyler's energy and enthusiasm for what she does is palpable. But she's no pushover. In 1983 Tyler's hit Total Eclipse of the Heart pushed Michael Jackson off the top of the Billboard Hot100 ensuring her a place in pop music history. She's never looked back and continues to record music and tour the world.
What can Capetonians expect from this week's concerts? "I've got a great band touring with me and the show features all the songs people love" she said, adding "I've been doing this for nearly forty years and my fans have become married with children. My fans are like family, we've come along way together and I want them to enjoy themselves and to sing along to my hits. I'm really looking forward to it".
If Tyler can keep away the Bloemfontein frost, can she melt the snow in the Cape? Let's see.
